Boarding house will be built
The Bavarian Landtag has agreed to finance the construction of a boarding house at Campus Martinsried. It will have seven floors with 42 rooms and will offer comfortable accommodation for guest scientists from all over the world. The building was designed by the Stark-architects from Munich. The project will cost 8.3 million Euro in total and is planned to be ready for use by the middle of 2014. The expenses will be covered by the Bavarian Ministry of Economy, Infrastructure, Traffic and Technology, and by the IZB GmbH.
New Director at the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry
Recently, Petra Schwille signed a contract as a Director at the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry (MPIB). The biophysicist is regarded as one of the leading scientists in her field. In addition to her official duties at the MPIB, she will continue her work at the Technical University of Dresden until April 2012. She will then move to Munich and take up her work at the MPIB. The new Research Department “Cellular and Molecular Biophysics” is going to investigate the interactions between different biomolecules inside the cell.

New Director at the Max Planck Institute of Neurobiology
Prof. Dr. Herwig Baier signed the contract as Director at the Max Planck Institute of Neurobiology. Up to now, the renowned neurobiologist was working and teaching at the University of California in San Francisco. He will come to Martinsried in September 2011, accompanied by his family and some of his staff. At the MPI of Neurobiology, he will found and head the Department of Genes-Neurons-Behavior. Central to his research is the question of how neuronal networks govern behavior.

Inauguration ceremony of West 2 at the IZB Martinsried
The Innovation and Startup Center for Biotechnology (IZB) in Planegg-Martinsried has just completed its expansion. Together with the Bavarian Minister of Economic Affairs Martin Zeil and the Bavarian Minister of Finances Georg Fahrenschon 140 guests participated at the inauguration ceremony of the 10th construction stage ‘West 2’of IZB with further 3.700 square meters lab and office space at November 4th 2010. Young life science start-ups now have over 76,000 square feet of modern office and laboratory space available.
